Sociologists have long been fascinated with the phenomenon of criminal behaviour. There is an extensive body of research on how and why people commit crimes. Much of this literature is devoted to establishing that some types of crime are more common than others, and that certain circumstances influence the propensity to commit a particular kind of crime. Other analyses focus on the question of how crime affects the social order. This article explores the historical background to the debate between the 'character' and 'environment' models, and looks at how these two perspectives have been appropriated and extended by the sociological literature. It then considers the implications for a 'puzzled' approach to understanding criminality. This is followed by a re-examination of the traditional character-environment model, which is then defended and extended. Attention is paid to the 'cultural' and 'technical' underpinnings of criminality. It is suggested that the search for a 'causal' explanation of crime is misleading, as it leads to a focus on the wrong sort of explanation. It is proposed that it is wrong to assume that criminal behaviour is a problem of psychopathology, and that crime is primarily a technical, sociological problem. This position is developed in relation to the ongoing debate between a 'puzzle' approach and a 'whodunnit' approach to explaining criminality.The proposed studies are designed to investigate the central neurotransmitter systems involved in the control of gonadotropin secretion. Experiments will test the hypothesis that dopamine (DA) neurons in the hypothalamus and/or the median eminence (ME) play a critical role in regulating the secretion of gonadotropins.
